We are a Catholic school that caters for boys and girls from Year 0 – 8. As a school we were founded in 1877 and came under the leadership of the Sisters of Our lady of the Missions in 1896. We are a school and community with a varied history of accommodating waves of migrants. Currently we are a very multicultural school with a large range of ethnicities reflecting the changing city that we live in. Our school exists to provide a Catholic education of the highest possible standard where Christ and Gospel values are the centre of school life.
We are a Decile 4 multi-cultural school with families from a wide range of cultures. We have a diligent Board of Trustees and Parish Community who work hard for the good of the children and staff. The Board members are representative of our multicultural families. The staff is fully committed, well qualified to carry out all aspects of the curriculum and dedicated to preserving the Catholic Character of the School. Whilst ensuring that the school is a safe, welcoming and happy place for our children and parents.
Our vision is that our students will be thinkers, organised, confident, literate and live the Sacred Heart Way. The Order of Our Lady of the Missions was founded by Sister Euphrasie Barbier born in Caen, Normandy France in 1829. She wanted her sisters to be straight forward people without grand pretensions. She wanted simplicity of hospitality and welcome and a special quality in relationships. Our Motto “Virtue and Knowledge”, stresses the need for students to follow the life of the Mission Sisters who lead a life of goodness, providing education and knowledge for many generations of students at Sacred Heart School. At Sacred Heart School we continue these traditions by focusing on these values, we do this by following the Sacred Heart Way.
We provide a varied and stimulating curriculum with a strong focus on collaboration. We participate in a wide range of sporting and cultural activities. We have a very strong performing arts programme focussed around our many cultures. Our major sports played are basketball, volleyball, netball, football and athletics.
The Kahukura Learning Community Cluster
Sacred Heart School is part of a cluster of schools who work together on two major projects. These schools are Cashmere, Thorrington, Addington, West Spreydon and South Intermediate. We also work at times with Cashmere High School. Our national project is “Maori Achievement Collaboratives (MAC)” where we work together to support each other in improving our programmes for Maori students and engaging with whānau. The other is an international project called “New Pedagogies for Deep Learning” which requires us to work with schools across the world developing powerful models of teaching and learning, supported by digital tools but with a focus on learning that is focused on creating and “doing”.
